Intention Setting Guide

Everything you need to understand the New Moon cycle, why intentions work, how the 12 houses shape your year, and how to use the rhythm of the sky to move through your life with genuine alignment.

01

What is a New Moon?

The Moon moves through a complete cycle every 29.5 days, passing through eight distinct phases. The New Moon is its beginning, when the Moon sits between the Earth and the Sun, its face fully dark and invisible in our sky. It is the moment of zero, of starting over, of the slate made clean.

01

The Astronomical Reality

A New Moon occurs when the Moon, Earth, and Sun align, with the Moon positioned between the Earth and Sun. The illuminated side of the Moon faces away from us, making it appear absent from the night sky. This happens approximately once every 29.5 days, meaning we experience twelve to thirteen New Moons each year, each one falling in a different sign of the zodiac.

02

The Energetic Significance

In astrological and cyclical traditions, the New Moon represents the beginning of a new chapter. It is the inhale before the exhale, the seed before the flower, the intention before the manifestation. The darkness of the sky at New Moon creates an energetic reset, a portal of possibility before any particular direction has been taken.

03

The Sign It Falls In

Every New Moon falls in a specific astrological sign, and that sign corresponds to a house in the natural zodiac. Aries rules the 1st house, Taurus the 2nd, and so on through to Pisces and the 12th. The sign tells you the quality of the energy available. The house tells you the area of life it activates.

04

The 29.5-Day Cycle

From New Moon to New Moon, the cycle moves through eight phases. New Moon → Waxing Crescent → First Quarter → Waxing Gibbous → Full Moon → Waning Gibbous → Last Quarter → Waning Crescent → back to New Moon. Each phase holds a different invitation. The New Moon begins the cycle. The Full Moon (two weeks later) reveals what has taken form.

02

Why We Set Intentions

An intention is not a wish. It is not a goal. It is a conscious orientation, a declaration of direction that aligns your energy, your attention, and your action toward something specific before the noise of ordinary life can pull you off course.

"The New Moon is when the energetic field is most available for imprint. What you plant in the dark is what grows toward the light."

The New Moon has been used across cultures and centuries as a moment of conscious beginning. Farmers planted by the lunar cycle because they understood that the Moon's gravitational pull affects the movement of water, in tides, in soil moisture, in the fluid systems of living things including the human body.

Modern intention-setting at the New Moon is not about magic in the traditional sense. It is about using a natural reset point, a moment when the slate is genuinely clear, to bring conscious direction to the 29.5 days ahead. The intention creates a filter through which you interpret experience, make decisions, and allocate attention.

01

Direction Before Distraction

Setting an intention at the New Moon means you have a conscious direction before the month's demands create one for you. Most people react to their lives rather than directing them. Intention-setting is the practice of going first.

02

Aligning with the House

When your intention is aligned with the house the New Moon is activating in your chart, it is working with the energetic current rather than against it. Intentions set in the wrong direction, or with no awareness of which area of life is most activated, are working without the current.

03

The 29.5-Day Window

From New Moon to New Moon you have approximately 29.5 days. The Full Moon two weeks in will illuminate what has begun to grow. The following New Moon will either extend the intention or offer a new one. Each cycle is complete in itself and builds on the one before.

04

Specificity is the Practice

A vague intention produces vague results, not because the universe doesn't hear it, but because your own attention doesn't know where to direct itself. The more specific the intention, in terms of what, how it feels, and what aligned action looks like, the more effective it becomes.

05

The Science Behind the Moon

Astronomers have confirmed that the Moon's gravitational pull moves the tides, affects soil moisture, and influences the fluid systems of living organisms, including the human body, which is roughly 60% water. If the Moon has measurable physical effects on the ocean, it is not unreasonable to consider its influence on our biology and our energy. Astrologers have been tracking these effects for over 3,000 years. The New Moon ritual is not mysticism disconnected from reality. It is a practice rooted in the oldest form of pattern recognition we have.

03

The 12 Houses

The birth chart is divided into twelve houses, each governing a distinct area of human life. The New Moon each month falls in a sign, and that sign corresponds to a house. That house is the area of life most energetically activated for the current lunar cycle.

What is a Birth Chart?

A birth chart is a snapshot of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It maps where the Sun, Moon, and planets were positioned across the twelve signs of the zodiac, and divides that sky into twelve sections called houses. Think of it as a personal blueprint: the signs show how energy expresses, the planets show what energy is at play, and the houses show where in your life that energy lands. You do not need to understand your entire chart to use this guide. You need one thing: your rising sign (Ascendant).

Rising Sign vs Sun Sign

Most people know their Sun sign. It is determined by the date you were born and describes the core of your identity, your conscious self, and the energy you are here to express. Your rising sign (also known as the Ascendant) is different. It is determined by the exact time and place of your birth, the sign that was literally rising on the horizon at your first breath. Where your Sun sign describes who you are, your rising sign describes how you meet the world and, most importantly for this guide, how the astrological wheel is arranged specifically for you.

Two people born on the same day can have completely different rising signs and therefore completely different house arrangements. A Pisces Sun with a Virgo Rising experiences every New Moon in entirely different houses than a Pisces Sun with an Aries Rising. This is why generic horoscopes based only on your Sun sign are limited. The rising sign is what makes astrology genuinely personal.

How the Houses Work

In the natural zodiac, Aries always rules the 1st house, Taurus the 2nd, Gemini the 3rd, and so on. But in your personal chart, the houses shift according to your rising sign. A Pisces Rising has Aries on their 2nd house, Taurus on their 3rd, and so on, which means every New Moon activates a different house for them than it does for an Aries Rising. This personalisation is what makes the ARC New Moon Guide specific rather than generic.

Above & Below the Horizon

The birth chart is bisected by the horizon line, the Ascendant–Descendant axis running from left to right. Houses 1–6 sit below the horizon. Houses 7–12 sit above it. This single division tells you whether a season calls you inward or outward.

Houses 1–6 · Below the Horizon

Creation Season
Unconscious · Internal

Below the horizon, the work is internal. These are the houses of personal development, private formation, and unconscious action. You are building the root system before the tree is visible. This is not inaction, it is the most essential kind of work. The depth of what you build here determines everything that follows.

For a business owner, a creator, or anyone building a life with intention, a below-horizon season means: go deeper, not wider. The broadcast can wait. The foundation cannot.

H1–3 Personal Identity: Clarify who you are, develop your voice, build the messaging architecture
H4–6 External Identity: Ground your physical space, build daily systems, develop the operational rhythm
Low broadcast. High depth. Let the work be invisible while it becomes real.

Houses 7–12 · Above the Horizon

Expansion Season
Conscious · External

Above the horizon, the work is outward-facing. These are the houses of public life, external relationship, and conscious action. What was built in the dark now meets the light. Partnerships form, investment moves, reputation builds, community activates. This is the broadcast season, but only what was genuinely built below will hold up to it.

This is not about performing visibility. It is the natural expression of roots that have gone deep enough to support the weight of being seen.

H7–9 External Expansion: Partnerships, investment, philosophy. The work goes out into the world
H10–12 Personal Expansion: Reputation, community, dissolution, the legacy and the reset
High visibility. Outward momentum. Let what you've built be fully seen.

The Core Principle

"Every season is an invitation, not an instruction. The houses tell you the quality of action available to you, the angle, the energy, the direction. Nothing in the wheel asks you to stand still, it shows you how to move."

05

The Four Quadrants

The twelve houses are grouped into four quadrants, each quadrant holding three houses and a distinct thematic cluster. Together they map the full arc of personal and public development across the astrological year.

Q1 · Houses 1–3

Personal
Identity

Houses 1, 2 & 3 · Below the Horizon

The most personal quadrant. You are working entirely with yourself, who you are, what you value, how you communicate. The external world has not yet entered the picture. This is the season of inner work before outward expression.

Clarify your identity and brand voice
Develop your offer and understand its true value
Build the messaging architecture, the language of your work
Go inward before you go outward

Q2 · Houses 4–6

External
Identity

Houses 4, 5 & 6 · Below the Horizon

Still below the horizon, but now you are building the external structures of your personal world, the home base, the creative practice, the daily rhythm. Identity is being expressed through how you live, what you make, and what you do every day.

Build daily systems and operational foundations
Develop your content rhythm and creative practice
Nurture private community and internal launches
Behind-the-scenes content over broadcast

Q3 · Houses 7–9

External
Expansion

Houses 7, 8 & 9 · Above the Horizon

The first above-horizon quadrant. You are now stepping into the world through relationship, transformation, and philosophy. Other people are the primary vehicle. Collaborations, investments, and ideas that travel are all activated here.

Pitch collaborations and sign contracts
Launch to the outside world. Visibility expands
Call in investment and high-value financial partnerships
Share your framework and intellectual architecture

Q4 · Houses 10–12

Personal
Expansion

Houses 10, 11 & 12 · Above the Horizon

The final quadrant, the most public and yet ultimately the most inward-turning. Reputation is built, community is activated, and then the cycle closes in the 12th house with dissolution, release, and sacred rest before the wheel begins again.

Let your reputation and legacy become visible
Activate and be held by your community
Release what has served its purpose
Rest, dissolve, and prepare the ground for what comes next

06

The Formula

Each New Moon falls in a sign that corresponds to a house in the natural zodiac. That house tells you which area of life is most energetically activated for the current lunar cycle, and whether you are in a creation season or an expansion season. This is the formula that makes the New Moon Guide personal rather than generic.

🌑

New Moon in Sign

Each New Moon falls in a specific zodiac sign. The sign sets the tone and quality of energy available for the cycle, Aries energy is initiating and bold, Taurus is grounding and slow, Gemini is communicative and quick.

Sign Activates House

Every sign corresponds to a house in your personal chart, determined by your rising sign. The same New Moon in Aries lands in a different house for every rising sign. This is what makes the map personal to you specifically.

House Defines Action

The activated house tells you the specific area of life calling for your attention, and whether you are in a creation season (below the horizon, roots down) or an expansion season (above the horizon, broadcast).

The Rhythm in Plain Language

Houses 1–6: Plant.
Houses 7–12: Bloom.

This is the seasonal heartbeat of manifestation. The New Moon Seasonal Guide is the monthly compass that tells you exactly where you are in that cycle and what aligned action looks like from your specific chart.

New Moon Energy by Zodiac Sign

Each New Moon carries the quality of its sign. Below is the energy, theme, and aligned action for every New Moon of the year, so you always know the tone of the season and what it asks of you.

There is urgency here, but not panic, it is the urgency of a soul that knows it has something to do and is finally ready to move.

♉ Taurus New Moon

Values & Material Foundation

What we are willing to tend with consistency is what this moon asks us to begin.

What we create from genuine pleasure under this sky carries an energy that outlasts any strategic effort.

♍ Virgo New Moon

Systems & Daily Ritual

Creation · Plant

The Virgo New Moon brings a quiet, purposeful energy, the feeling of clearing space, sharpening tools, and preparing the ground. This is not a glamorous moon, but it is a powerful one. The energy is discerning, devoted, and oriented toward refinement. This lunation asks us to look honestly at our daily rhythms and rituals, to release what is not serving, and to begin again with more intention. What we tend to consistently under this sky gradually becomes something extraordinary.

♎ Libra New Moon

Partnerships & Alliances

Expansion · Bloom

The Libra New Moon turns our attention outward, toward the people, partnerships, and connections that shape our path. The energy is relational, aesthetic, and seeking alignment. This is not a passive moon; it asks us to make conscious choices about who we stand beside and what we are willing to commit to. Where Aries began alone, Libra completes through another. This lunation opens doors that only open from both sides.

♏ Scorpio New Moon

Transformation & Investment

Expansion · Bloom

The Scorpio New Moon descends into the depths. The energy here is intense, magnetic, and uninterested in surface appearances, it wants truth, transformation, and the kind of intimacy that requires real courage. This lunation asks us to look at what we have been avoiding, to release what has outlived its purpose, and to trust that something more aligned is waiting on the other side of the letting go. This moon does not disturb the surface. It moves the water beneath it.

♐ Sagittarius New Moon

Philosophy & Reach

Expansion · Bloom

The Sagittarius New Moon expands the horizon. The energy is philosophical, freedom-seeking, and lit with the particular excitement of someone who has just glimpsed a possibility they cannot yet name. It is a moon that rewards faith over logic.

♑ Capricorn New Moon

Reputation & Legacy

Expansion · Bloom

The Capricorn New Moon carries the energy of quiet authority. It is structured, ambitious, and oriented toward the long game, toward what endures beyond the moment. Under this sky, what is built with discipline and integrity begins to compound.

♒ Aquarius New Moon

Networks & Community

The Aquarius New Moon carries the charge of the future arriving early. The energy is visionary, unconventional, and deeply invested in the collective, in what we can create together that none of us could create alone. This lunation asks us to release the need to fit the mould and to set intentions around the contribution only we can make. Under this sky, radical authenticity is not a risk. It is the invitation.

♓ Pisces New Moon

Release & Mystery

Expansion · Bloom

The Pisces New Moon closes the astrological year with a deep, dissolving exhale. The energy is liminal, mystical, and oriented toward surrender, toward the intelligence that moves through us when we stop trying to control the outcome. This lunation asks us to release what the year has been holding, to trust what we cannot yet see, and to rest in the space between what was and what is becoming. What we let go of here creates the ground for everything that follows.
